Located in central Laos, Muang Khammouan province borders Savannakhet and Bolokhamxay province. It is about 16,000 square kilometers. The region features the Annamite Mountain range which frames the River Mekong in the west of this province while to the east, the mountain range separates the province from Vietnam.
The capital of Muang Khammouan is Tha Khaek that face Nakhon Phanom across the river in the northeastern Thailand. Today, many French colonial style official buildings are still remained in the city. Moreover, villas and shops are among those style of French.
Outside the city, ones immediately walk to the natural resources are mountains and forests. The Nakai Namtheun forest preservation, Hinnamnor forest preservation and Phou Hinpoun forest make Muang Khammouan impressive and truly natural sights. Not only there are mountains and forests asides, many caves and rivers (Xebangfay, Hinboun, Namtheun and Namgnum rivers) complete the sight. From the high, it reveals excellent panoramic view.
To those elements, most of locals in this province work on agriculture. Rice paddy fields, sugar canes and banana and cabbage make the region more colorful. To the ones who love fresh air in nature and harmony place, the province is really a suitable location where people are friendly and kind. In Muang Khammouan, language is not the only tool used in conversation, because not many local can speak English, gesture must be a choice.
Attractions
The Great Rocky Wall stretches from Thakhek to the Namdone river. It was built in Sikhottabong Empire at the middle of the 19th century. Today, it is considered as the national heritage and tourist site.
Tham Khonglor Cave is located in the Nation Protected forest area of Hinboun mountain in Muang Khammouan. The cave is 7,400 meters long while the width ranges from 10 to 90 meters. The Hinboun river flow through the cave yearly.
There are other attractive sites like Tham Nang cave that located 4 km from Ban Na village, Tad Kham waterfall located 52 km outside of Thakhek district, Wat Pha Sokkhamsene temple located about 1km outside of Nongbok district.
Tham Lot Kong Lo is an amazing cavernous tunnel 4 kilometers long. The limestone tunnel make you surprised with enormous structure like that when you see in real eyes.
National Biodiversity Conservation area of Nakai-Nam Theun is located right in the Vietnam border, Nakai-Nam Theun is house to several habitats surrounded by cloud forests to evergreen forests.
The feature product of the region is cloth weaved by the local. The two villages Konglor and Natan are famous for textile weaving tradition. Therefore weaving patterns are very distinct to every ethnic group in Muang Khammouan.
